Reviewer’s Playground-1
Amazon.com found a way to incorporate “word of mouth” advertising into its site by letting its customers submit their own reviews for the products. However, cyberspace has a way of altering original intentions, and some “reviewers” have another, less practical agenda. Take for instance, this review submitted for one of the seminal texts of deconstruction, Jacques Derrida’s Dissemination. The reviewer was “Maximillian Gluteus PhD (Prague) from "Plato's Cave", a Gentleman's Club.” And it reads:
”The umbilicus of this book is very large. It is one of the reasons I bought it, in spite of the fact that it is very large. Anacolutha virtually ooze out of its orifice, in a gush of putrescent verbiage. Despite its immense dimensions, it is surprisingly devoid of daikon spritzer; I usually find some around. To enter into its Weltanschaung is a quixotic instance of deja vu, preceded by a perfunctory act of sesquipedalian seppuku. In conclusion, I would say that you are probably missing the point.”
Eight of 34 people have found this review to be “helpful.” I’m not sure how to interpret such polling data.
